How To Get A Domain Name

In this day and age, it takes more time to get your coffee from Starbucks than it does to think up, research and register a domain name. There are popular domain registration websites that advertise on television and in magazines, and most offer such low rates, it only costs a few dollars a month to own the domain of your dreams. There are even web pages where people buy, sell and trade domains with each other in hopes of landing the next Amazon.com. The process of how to get a domain name is easy, the real work goes into thinking up a clever domain that isn’t already taken.

There are three main points you want to keep in mind when it comes to registering your own domain name. You want the name to be short, descriptive and easy to remember. There is a reason why sites like Amazon, Buy.com and other short URLs are so popular. They are easy to remember and easy to spell. You also want your domain to be descriptive. Buy.com is a perfect example. Some websites can get away with having a URL that has nothing to do with what the site is for, but for the most part, you don’t want to confuse your prospective fan base or customer base. Finally, you want it to be easy to remember. Try to go with something funny, cute or clever. Once you’ve managed to come up with a domain you want to spend money on, you have to check to see if it is available.

The second part of how to get a domain name is to use sites like GoDaddy.com to see if a particular domain is available. Simply visit any of the major domain registry sites like GoDaddy.com, Enom.com or Network Solutions and type in the name you want to register. What you may find is that the original URL (.com, .net) is taken, but there are other ones available, like .tv. Granted, these secondary extensions aren’t quite as popular right now, but they are going to be household names very quickly as fewer and fewer .com domains remain. A good domain is all about being easy to remember and sticking in people’s heads. If you have a solid product and a great advertising strategy, having a .tv-style URL won’t hurt you.

Now that you’ve chosen a domain, all you have to do is register it. You can use any of the above sites or any of the other major registry sites to secure your domain. It is very important that you remember when your registry expires so that someone doesn’t swoop in and steal your URL from you. Cybersquatters can make getting your site back a bother, so remember to renew long before your site expires.

Now that you know how to get a domain name, the sky truly is the limit. You can also look for pre-registered domains at sites like Sedo.com, which auction off domain names and allow for people to trade names they already own. Remember, a domain says a lot about your website or your online business, make sure your first impression is the best it can be!
